We tested the Insta360 X5 on our latest travels, and while the 8K footage and horizon leveling are stunning, dealing with massive files and post-shoot reframing can definitely slow down your workflow. It is a fantastic outdoor tool, but only if you have the patience to edit what you shoot.

Lynn’s notes
To be honest, the biggest friction point I ran into with the X5 is the sheer amount of effort it takes after you stop recording. Shooting in 8K 360 degrees captures literally everything around you, but the catch is that you still have to sit down and reframe those angles or rely on the InstaFrame mode before you have a standard video to share. When we're wiped out after a long travel day, sorting through immersive 360-degree files can feel like a real chore. On top of that, spending $549.99 means you have to treat it with real care; even though the lenses are newly replaceable and scratch-resistant, having two exposed glass domes on an action camera is always a little nerve-racking around rocky campsites.
Here is where it balances out, though: the hardware upgrades genuinely deliver on the road. The dual 1/1.28-inch sensors and triple AI chips made a huge difference in my low-light testing, pulling clean, vibrant color out of dusky campground scenes without devolving into a grainy mess. And the FlowState stabilization combined with the 360 Horizon Lock is unreal—it kept our clips completely level even when mounted over jarring washboard trails, completely eliminating any need for a gimbal.
I also have to give credit to the updated 4-mic array and built-in wind guard. In my experience, wind noise usually ruins outdoor action footage, but this setup actually kept our voices clear without needing extra external mic accessories. If you don't mind putting in the time behind the screen to reframe your shots, the X5's combination of tough swappable lenses, invisible stick framing, and rock-solid stabilization makes it a worthwhile travel companion.
